That fence set the whole plan for the day.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The City of Cambridge brought us in to photograph Sophy Tuttle\u2019s painted ribbon before the plaza opens to the public. Not the opening. The artwork, on its own, while the site is still closed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The reason matters, because it changed everything about how we shot it. These photographs are not going into a recap gallery. They are going to a graphic designer, who will cut the ribbon out of its background and build event flyers and tote bags around it. It is a sculptural piece that winds horizontally and vertically through the plaza, and the city describes it as seating, lighting, and a performance platform all at once. It ties the two halves of the plaza together at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and River Street.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Cambridge Arts commissioned Tuttle to paint it through the city\u2019s Percent-for-Art program, which sets aside one percent of the construction cost on municipal projects for art on the site. She was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgema.gov\/news\/detail?path=%2Fsitecore%2Fcontent%2Fhome%2Farts%2Fnews%2F2023%2F12%2Fartistselectedtopaintmuralonnewgatewayarchtocentralsquare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">selected by a ten member committee in 2023<\/a> and her work runs toward nature and native species.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">So the surface is curved metal, painted, wrapping around corners and dipping under bench seating. In a few spots you can stand almost against the painted surface but you cannot step back. In other spots you cannot get inside at all.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That is three different problems and I brought three answers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>The ultra wide, for the places I could not back up.<\/strong> Where the fence was tight against the ribbon, a normal lens would have given me a piece of a leaf. Long glass also flattens the background, which mattered for the next part.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>The 135mm f\/1.8, for isolation.<\/strong> This is the one that was really about the designer. Wide open, that lens separates the painted surface from everything behind it. Traffic, scaffolding, orange cones, the bank across the street. All of it goes soft. I was not shooting to make a nice picture of a plaza. That is the part of this job nobody sees. Some of it meant working one section to find the angle where the scaffolding did not land in the frame.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4812\" data-end=\"4936\">And some of it meant checking the back of the camera with Lillian standing right there. She has been on this commission since the artist was selected. It goes up. Somebody photographs it. Then marketing needs a flyer, and the merchandise vendor needs a file, and the annual report needs a spread, and every photograph you have is a wide shot of the artwork sitting in its setting with a bus and a construction cone in it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Those images are not wrong. They are just not usable for that job. Nobody wants to put a bus stop on a tote bag.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The plan going into this one was to isolate sections of the ribbon cleanly enough that a designer could lift them out and build around them. The idea we shot toward was the ribbon running as a border with the event information in the middle. The designer will make the final call on that, and we do not run the design. Cambridge Public Works, Cambridge Arts, the City Manager\u2019s Office, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/camayahvisuals.com\/work\/central-sq-bid\/\">Central Square Business Improvement District<\/a> are all part of it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That is four groups with different needs coming out of one set of photographs. Public Works has an infrastructure project finishing. Cambridge Arts has an artist commission to document. The City Manager\u2019s Office has an opening to promote. The BID has a square to represent.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One shoot, four uses.
