There is a chain link fence around the Carl Barron Plaza, and most of the time you cannot get more than a few feet from the ribbon. That fence set the whole plan for the day.<\/p>\n

The City of Cambridge brought us in to photograph Sophy Tuttle\u2019s painted ribbon before the plaza opens to the public. Not the opening. The artwork, on its own, while the site is still closed.<\/p>\n

The reason matters, because it changed everything about how we shot it. These photographs are not going into a recap gallery. They are going to a graphic designer, who will cut the ribbon out of its background and build event flyers and tote bags around it. A photograph that looks good on a phone and a photograph a designer can actually use are two different things.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The ribbon is not a mural on a wall. It is a sculptural piece that winds horizontally and vertically through the plaza, and the city describes it as seating, lighting, and a performance platform all at once. It ties the two halves of the plaza together at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and River Street.<\/p>\n

Cambridge Arts commissioned Tuttle to paint it through the city\u2019s Percent-for-Art program, which sets aside one percent of the construction cost on municipal projects for art on the site. She was selected by a ten member committee in 2023<\/a> and her work runs toward nature and native species.<\/p>\n

So the surface is curved metal, painted, wrapping around corners and dipping under bench seating. There is no flat side and no single angle that shows you the whole thing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The temporary fence is close to the ribbon in most places. In a few spots you can stand almost against the painted surface but you cannot step back. In other spots you cannot get inside at all.<\/p>\n

That is three different problems and I brought three answers.<\/p>\n

The ultra wide, for the places I could not back up.<\/strong> Where the fence was tight against the ribbon, a normal lens would have given me a piece of a leaf. The ultra wide let me stand close and still hold a full section of the painting in frame.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Up to 200mm, from outside the gate.<\/strong> For the sections I could not reach, I stood outside the fenced area and pulled details in from across the plaza. Long glass also flattens the background, which mattered for the next part.<\/p>\n

The 135mm f\/1.8, for isolation.<\/strong> This is the one that was really about the designer. Wide open, that lens separates the painted surface from everything behind it. Traffic, scaffolding, orange cones, the bank across the street. All of it goes soft. A clean edge between the subject and a blurred background is far easier to cut out than a sharp edge sitting against a sharp chain link fence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That last decision is the whole reason the day worked. I was not shooting to make a nice picture of a plaza. I was shooting to hand somebody a file they could pull apart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

An otter, under the bench.<\/strong> Face and one paw, coming up through painted water and reeds, right at the height of your ankles when you walk by. You have to crouch to see it properly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A raccoon, on the other side.<\/strong> Just the eyes and the top of the mask, painted so the wooden bench slats sit across the top of its head like it is peering out from under something.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Fish, running along the arch overhead.<\/strong> They are painted on the underside and the curve of the arch, so you catch them when you look up while walking through.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Not everything is hidden. A cormorant stands the full height of one column and you can see it from across the plaza.<\/p>\n

You get both, depending on how long you stay. The wildlife you notice walking past, and the wildlife that waits until you sit down.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lillian Hsu, Director of Public Art and Exhibitions at Cambridge Arts, met us at the plaza and got us onto the site. That is the part of this job nobody sees. You can plan every lens you want, but if nobody opens the gate you are photographing through a fence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Inside, some of it meant lying flat on the pavers to shoot up at the underside of the arch. Some of it meant working one section to find the angle where the scaffolding did not land in the frame.<\/p>\n

And some of it meant checking the back of the camera with Lillian standing right there. She has been on this commission since the artist was selected. If the person who has lived with the project can see the frame while we are still on site, we fix it then instead of later.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Here is the part most organizations do not think about until it is too late.<\/p>\n

You commission a piece of public art. It goes up. Somebody photographs it. Then marketing needs a flyer, and the merchandise vendor needs a file, and the annual report needs a spread, and every photograph you have is a wide shot of the artwork sitting in its setting with a bus and a construction cone in it.<\/p>\n

Those images are not wrong. They are just not usable for that job. Nobody wants to put a bus stop on a tote bag.<\/p>\n

The plan going into this one was to isolate sections of the ribbon cleanly enough that a designer could lift them out and build around them. The idea we shot toward was the ribbon running as a border with the event information in the middle. The designer will make the final call on that, and we do not run the design. But we shot so that option stays open, along with several others, instead of shooting a set of pictures that only work one way.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That is what public art documentation<\/a> means when it is done properly. It is not just a record of what the piece looks like. It is a set of files that still works when somebody needs them for something you had not thought of yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Who Is Behind This<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

This one has more organizations attached to it than most projects we take on. Cambridge Public Works, Cambridge Arts, the City Manager\u2019s Office, and the Central Square Business Improvement District<\/a> are all part of it.<\/p>\n

That is four groups with different needs coming out of one set of photographs. Public Works has an infrastructure project finishing. Cambridge Arts has an artist commission to document. The City Manager\u2019s Office has an opening to promote. The BID has a square to represent.<\/p>\n

One shoot, four uses. Planning for that up front is cheaper than doing it four times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We are also covering the plaza opening itself, which means the same team that photographed the artwork empty will photograph it full of people.<\/p>\n

That continuity is worth something. We already know where the otter is. We know which angle on the arch works in flat light and which one needs the sun somewhere else. On the day of the event, that is time we do not spend figuring things out while the ribbon is being cut.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
